Wacky Bunny

Initial development period: July 2020 - Present

Wacky Bunny was originally designed for the 2020 Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam.  It has gone through several design changes since then.

The game's artwork is from the Kenney Game Assets 1 pack.  But features code written by myself in the Unity engine.  This was my first time using physics in Unity and has been the project where I have learned the most about Unity.

Inspiration

The theme of the 2020 Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam was "Out of Control."  To accomplish this theme, I went with a platformer featuring a character who was difficult to control but still felt satisfying landing jumps.  The iteration of the game that was submitted to the jam also featured checkpoints that would change the input mappings.

The Current Game

Wacky Bunny currently features 3 basic levels.  These levels were designed quickly for the game jam and might not stay in the final version of the game.

The controls have been greatly simplified since the game jam.  They do not get remapped at any point during the game and I am currently in the process of making the movement feel more natural and satisfying.

Additionally, there are three unique enemies in the game with separate behaviors.  They can all damage the player who will restart at the beginning of the level when there is no health remaining.

The Future Game

In addition to adding more levels and just improving visuals in general, there are a couple of big changes that the game will undergo.

The current change I am working on is a change to the character movement.  The previous movement felt too "floaty" and it was difficult to make some jumps.  As a solution, I am adding a jetpack to the character.  This will allow the player to control their jumps better but will require a big change in how the jumping code works.

Another big change will be to the enemy AI.  Some of the enemy AI will be updated and I plan to add more enemies as well.  There will also be environmental challenges for the player to overcome such as spikes on the ground.
